Internet Group Management Protocol

  • The IGMP is a simple protocol to support IP multicast.
  • It operates on physical network, for example;  Single ethernet segment.
  • Routers can use IGMP to keep track of membership in a multicast group.
  • IGMP helps the multicast router to create and update a list of loyal members related to each router interface. In any network, there can be one or more multicast router that is used to distribute multicast packets to hosts or other routers.
